The Reigate Caves

The Reigate Caves go almost un-noticed in the heart of this busy Surrey town. Some of these fascinating 'caves' are cared for by WCMS who run several public open days over the year. Well worth a visit, a great family day out! All three sites are within easy walking distance and include:
Tunnel Road, East Side and West — Victorian sand-mines, Edwardian bottle dumps, WW1 ammo stores, WW2 shelters, ARP and civil defence.
The Barons' Cave — Probably the oldest and most well known of Reigate's many sand caves, a medieval cavern below the remains of the old castle.

The Surrey Mines

WCMS is more than just another caving club. We have a strong interest in the long-forgotten mine and underground quarry workings of the South East, in particular the firestone quarries of East Surrey. We are actively engaged in the study of their history, geology, archaeology, natural history, conservation and how they form an integral part of the local environment, in the process amassing an impressive library of research material, much of which is available via this website. We run frequent trips to these sites, and encourage new members to come along and get involved.
